Covering not only Playstation 2, Xbox, PC and Nintendo Game Boy formats, this year's edition of EA Sports' FIFA Football is now out for mobile phones across Europe.
Launched simultaneously with titles for Playstation 2, Xbox, PC and Nintendo Game Boy formats, the arrival of Electronic Arts Sports' in J2ME format marks the first simultaneous cross-platform launch of a major game title in Europe to include a version for mobile phones.
Co-published on behalf of Electronic Arts by Digital Bridges’ dbi mobile games publishing unit, EA Sports FIFA Football 2004 Mobile International Edition is based on the desktop and console titles as a simulation featuring the world’s top-ranked national teams and their players. Users govern every aspect of play, from selecting their teams and formations, to controlling their squad as they attempt to break down the defence of some of the world’s greatest sides.
Improvements made on the 2003 version of the game include better graphics, with an improved representation of ball height, player animations and overall look; yellow/red cards; improved AI set pieces, letting teams build walls when needed and draw upon a range of ways of taking free kicks and corners; and the penalty system having been changed from 2D to 3D to allow a level of skill. Also, the AI of the goalkeeper has been overhauled, and additional gameplay features have been added.
Additionally, the real-world national team names, player names and team and player stats in the game have been updated with official FIFA data. The 16 national teams available in EA SPORTS FIFA Football 2004 Mobile International Edition are Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Cameroon, England, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Nigeria, Portugal, Russia, Scotland, Spain, and Switzerland.
Each of the 22 players on the pitch are controlled by advanced artificial intelligence, with the user switching control between players. As with the 2003 Mobile International Edition, in addition to the friendly and tournament modes, users of the 2004 edition will be able to pick game settings for difficulty, stategy bias (defensive/offensive), and match time.
The set of mobile phones on which the 2004 edition of the game will be available has been expanded from the existing Nokia Series 40 and 60, Motorola T-720, Sharp GX-10 and Siemens S55 series to now include the Siemens SL55 and the Sharp GX-20. It is available as a download from most European mobile network operators; from broadcasters; web portals and specialised mobile entertainment web sites; and, as a retail pack.
