P800 users petition for P900 functionalityBy Jørgen Sundgot, Monday 3 November 2003
Over 2,000 owners of Sony Ericsson's P800 have signed up for a petition requesting the manufacturer brings the UIQ 2.1 platform of the P900 to its predecessor.

Short on the heels of the launch of Sony Ericsson's P900 wireless handheld, frustrated owners of the Sony Ericsson P800 have established a petition seeking Sony Ericsson to provide a software upgrade for the P800 to bring certain aspects of its functionality on par with its successor. On November 3, over 2,000 P800 owners had signed the petition, which cites a number of issues with the way Sony Ericsson has treated P800 customers thus far.

The main issue of the petition revolves around the use of an updated version of the UIQ platform which powers both the P800 and the P900. Respectively, the two devices use version 2.0 and version 2.1 of the platform, and the latter - despite the short version number leap - offers several important fixes and improvements over the version found in the P800.

Signees to the petition agree that upon purchase, it was expected that the device - as an expensive purchase - would have a reasonable amount of longevity, beyond the 10 months that have passed since the introduction of the device and to the introduction of its successor.

Citing the two devices being based in general on similarly powerful hardware and offering a similar range of functionality, the petition also refers to a white paper by Sony Ericsson named "P800 in the enterprise", and that the manufacturer here implied that P800 users could expect major updates in many key areas. On this particular note, the petition claims that other than some trivial patches, the P800 has not had any update which could in any way be described as major.

Summarizing the petition is the claim that the P800 with UIQ 2.0 suffers from several major flaws which could be fixed with the introduction of a UIQ 2.1 upgrade, which the petition in general seeks to present as reasonable to expect given the small differences between the two devices.
