Three new Axim models are unveiled as Dell officially launches the X3 series with one model boasting integrated Wi-Fi, all sporting SDIO capable expansion slots and more. And yes, they're still inexpensive.
Dell today expanded its handheld product family with the introduction of the Axim X3 series, to be available worldwide in three configurations. Nearly a third lighter than its predecessor and also thinner, Dell said the Axim X3 would not replace the Axim X5 handheld which is responsible for having made Dell one of the leading suppliers of handhelds worldwide in less than a year. The three models include the Axim X3i with integrated Wi-Fi 802.11b for €329, and two non-wireless Axim X3 configurations for €269 and €199.

Based on Microsoft's Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC platform, the X3 line comes with the usual line-up of applications including Pocket Outlook, Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, MSN Messenger and Windows Media Player, and will also come with one year advanced exchange service standard.
Both the €329 and €269 configurations are powered by an Intel XScale processor running at 400 MHz, and offer 64 MB of SDRAM and 64 MB of Intel StrataFlash ROM memory, although it is unknown how much of this will be made available to users. Also, the X3 will feature an SDIO capable SD/MMC card expansion slot, along with a 3.5" transflective TFT screen capable of displaying up to 65,536 colours at the standard Pocket PC resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. The unit's sync/recharge cradle - standard on €329 Axim X3i and €269 Axim X3 configuration - has an extra battery charge slot that accommodates either a spare standard battery (950 mAh) or the available high-capacity (1800 mAh) battery.
Meanwhile, the €199 Axim X3's configuration offers a 300 MHz Intel XScale processor, 32 MB of SDRAM memory, 32 MB of Intel StrataFlash ROM memory and a USB sync cable instead of a cradle, in addition to all the other features of the €269 unit. Again, how much memory is available to users is unknown at this time.
Measuring 117 x 15 x 77 mm and weighing in at 142 grams, the Axim X3 will also feature a consumer range infrared port although Dell did not specify whether the company included software with the handheld to make use of this capability.
