MiTAC's Mio 8380 smartphone, powered by Microsoft's Smartphone 2002 platform, will soon be able to unlock their device to install uncertified applications. Having chosen a path also implemented by the first carrier to introduce a device based on this platform, the Orange SPV, MiTAC appears to have bowed to pressure from end users realizing the software selection for locked Smartphone 2002 devices is rather slim compared with that available for unlocked devices.

According to a notice on the MiTAC JustMio web site, an online service enabling users to unlock their smartphones will be made available some time in October. There is no mention of whether the company will charge for this service.">
