Palm offers keyboard, camera, other accessoriesBy Larry Garfield, Tuesday 16 September 2003
Palm SG, soon to be palmOne, has added a slew of new accessories to its lineup, including a wireless keyboard, SD camera, and more.

As part of its usual fall product cycle, Palm, which will become palmOne later this fall, has taken the wraps off of several new accessories. Highlights include a new infrared keyboard, SD camera, three new stylii, and several cases.

The new Palm Wireless Keyboard sports a keyboard layout nearly identical to the Think Outside-designed Palm Ultra-Thin Keyboard, but instead of a Universal Connector includes a rotating arm with infrared port, which will work with nearly any top-mounted IR port Palm OS device. (That includes any Palm-branded device of the past five years, but not some of the newer, over-long Sony CLIEs.) The keyboard runs on a pair of AAA batteries, and folds in half to be somewhat larger than the Palm UT Keyboard but still pocketable. The keyboard does not lock open, however, as the Palm UT Keyboard does. Palm also released a new driver that works with the new Wireless Keyboard as well as the Palm UT Keyboard. The Palm Wireless Keyboard will sell for $69.95 USD.

Palm also announced a new Secure Digital camera accessory, which is compatible with any Tungsten-line device that includes Palm Photos or PhotoBase. (The Zire 71 already includes its own camera.) The 1.3 megapixel (1280 x 1024 resolution) camera can take up to 24-bit pictures and store them in the Palm's memory for later synchronization to the desktop as standard JPG images. The camera includes swiveling lense for self-portraits or forward-facing shots, a digital zoom, and even video-capture support. It will sell for $99.95 USD.

Less exciting but still of interest are Palm's new stylii and cases. Palm has added five new cases to their lineup for various devices, including a Zire hard case, ranging from $14.95 USD to $69.95 USD. It also introduced an Executive Multifunction Stylus, a full pen-sized device that includes a pen, stylus, laser pointer, and pen-light all in one, which will sell for $19.95 USD. For Palm Zire users who lament the lack of a backlight, Palm has aldo introduced a Zire Lighted Stylus Pen Pack. The pack includes a pen/stylus and a stylus with a flashlight tip for night time usage, both of which work only with the original Zire. The pack sells for $14.95 USD. And for the fashion critic, Palm also announced a new 24-carat gold plated stylus for the Tungsten W and C, available exclusively online for $29.95 USD.

The Palm SD camera will be available in November. All other accessories will be available 1 October.
