Siemens unveils ST55 camera phoneBy Jørgen Sundgot, Tuesday 5 August 2003
The latest and greatest mobile phone from Siemens offers an integrated VGA camera, a 65,536-colour TFT display and MMS support in a compact size: meet the ST55.

Read the review of Siemens ST55.

Following up on its recent launch of its first camera phone, the MC60, Siemens has now introduced the second model to boast an integrated camera - the slightly more luxurious ST55. Features include support for MMS and dual-band GSM, a 16-bit (65,536 colours) TFT display and of course the centerpiece VGA resolution camera.

The ST55 is Siemens' second camera phone, and the first to offer VGA resolution
Snagging the throne from Siemens' SL55 as the manufacturer's top-of-the-line model, the feature set of the ST55 is not too unfamiliar from other recent models, with the exception of almost all features being improved upon. Its integrated digital camera boasts a resolution of 0,3 megapixels (VGA), which is almost double that of the MC60, while its 16-bit TFT display offers 16 times as many colours - 65,536, to be exact - as that of the MC60's 12-bit.

Also, the display of the ST55 offers an unusually high resolution of 120 x 160 pixels, while the digital camera of the phone sports a 4x digital zoom feature - a camera phone first. On the storage side, however, the ST55 loses out to competing products from Nokia as it features only 1.2 MB of memory for storing photos, which is less than a third offered by comparable models from Nokia and Sony Ericsson.

MMS support is also part of the SL55's feature list, as is several games and organiser functionality. Users can, of course, also browse pictures stored on the handset, however Siemens did not elaborate on whether these can be transmitted by other means than MMS. 40-tone polyphonic ringtones are sure to please future owners, however, and the ST55 also offers other advanced features such as GPRS Class 10 and a WAP 2.0 compatible microbrowser.

Additionally, an address book offers up to 15 fields per entry, while calendar and reminder functions provide additional PIM functionality.

Measuring 99 x 47 x 22 mm and weighing in at 87 grams, the ST55 belongs to the segment of compact mobile phones despite its wide range of features, which also includes a five-way joystick.

According to Siemens, the ST55 has a standby time of up to 140 hours and a talk time of about 4.5 hours. Its standard package includes the ST55 handset, a 750 mAh Lithium Ion battery, mains charger and a user guide. The camera phone will be available across Europe from August.
