Hitachi G1000 now available from SprintBy Jørgen Sundgot, Thursday 24 July 2003
Sprint has now announced the nationwide, exclusive availability of the Hitachi G1000 - to be known as the SH-G1000 - on its CDMA2000 1xRTT network in the U.S.

Having left anticipating customers in suspense for some time, Hitachi and Sprint today announced that the Hitachi G1000 - to be known as the SH-G1000 in its Sprint incarnation - is now available on Sprint's CDMA2000 1xRTT network in the U.S. Running Pocket PC 2002 Phone Edition, the SH-G1000 is the first Pocket PC ever to sport an integrated thumbboard, and the second to integrate a digital camera.

The SH-G1000 is now available from Sprint PCS in the U.S. market
Arriving close on the heels of Samsung's SPH-i700 which is now available from Verizon Wireless, the SH-G1000 becomes one of only two CDMA-based devices running Pocket PC 2002 Phone Edition in the U.S. Competing GSM/GPRS devices include the T-Mobile MDA, and the Siemens SX56 which is available from AT&T.

Weighing in at 8.4 oz and measuring 5.8" x 3.3" x 0.9", the SH-G1000 is one of the largest and also heaviest Pocket PCs on the market to date. The device is powered by a 400 MHz Intel PXA255 XScale processor, but is only equipped with 32 MB of RAM - an unusually low amount compared similarly powered, non-wireless handhelds. Its display is of a 3.5" 16-bit TFT variety, while the integrated digital camera offers VGA resolution.

A single band PCS Vision phone, the SH-G1000 is equipped with a scroll dial and an integrated thumbboard - the latter of which is the first of its kind in a Pocket PC. Also, an SD/MMC Card expansion slot offers memory expansion for those finding the built-in 32 MB cramped.

Customers of the SH-G1000 will be able to use Sprint's Picture Mail service send and share images with others using the built-in digital camera, while customers with a monthly PCS Vision Service Plan that includes Picture Mail will also be able to store photos in their own own online photo album. Other features of the SH-G1000 include voice dialling, speakerphone capabilities and integrated GPS for future location-based services.

According to Hitachi, the replaceable Lithium Ion battery of the unit provides 2.5 hours of continuous talk time and seven days of standby time. The G1000 is also packaged with a USB cradle, AC adapter, AC cable, travel charger and soft case with belt clip.

The G1000 will be available for $649.99 through multiple Sprint distribution channels including Sprint Stores, the Sprint PCS web site, at Sprint business channels including the PCS Direct Business Sales Force, the Sprint Business Dealer Network (SBDN), and members of the PCS Business Solutions Program indirect enterprise channel.
