Handango split on erotica issueBy Jørgen Sundgot, Thursday 3 July 2003
Having ever-so-quietly weeded out erotica software from its international offerings, Handango's Germany branch upholds sales - as do affiliates powered by its technology.

As a result of a new and more family-friendly policy, online software retailer Handango has quietly removed all erotica-related software from its international offering. Still, all is not lost for those seeking such software as the company's technology remains powering a large number of affiliates who continue to offer such software - as does Handango's own branch in Germany.

Despite having established relationships with a wide range of players in the mobile device industry - including Nokia, Microsoft, Motorola, Palm, Sprint, HP, CompUSA and others - Handango's decision to remove erotica-related software will have a large impact on the ease of with which customers can locate such software given the lion's share of the market posessed by the online retailer.

With over 25,000 titles offered, the removal of erotica-related software is unlikely to impact Handango's earnings, as it represents only a fraction of its overall offering.

But apparently, not all agree with Handango's decision as a number of affiliate stores powered by Handango's technology continue to offer erotica-related software. Among these are one of the world's largest shareware providers, Tucows, and also Handango's own branch in Germany, where customers can freely continue to purchase erotica-related titles - albeit for how long is uncertain.

Simplifying matters further, current and previous Handango customers who are still in posession of Handango accounts will be able to use these with various Handango affiliates without further ado.
