After several years in limbo, Conduits has now launched an updated version of Pocket Player, supporting MP3, WMA and Ogg Vorbis formats.
Conduits Technologies has announced the release of Pocket Player 2.0, an alternative music player for Pocket PC supporting the latest media player standards and formats. Having rested in limbo since its introduction at a time when the Pocket PC platform had not yet been introduced, Pocket Player 2.0 now runs on all ARM-based Pocket PC devices, such as the Pocket PC 2000, Pocket PC 2002, and Windows Mobile 2003 Software for Pocket PC.

The Pocket Player interface is designed to enable both one-handed and stylus operation of the device, as well as thumb and finger use of the device courtesy of newly designed oversized buttons. Also, Pocket Player 2.0 supports specialized skins in its own format, as well as other common skin formats, to allow users to customize the look and feel of the application to their own preference.
Playback of common audio formats such as MP3 and WMA are supported, as are WAV files recorded with the built-in Pocket PC Voice Recorder. Playback of files stored in the free, open Ogg Vorbis format, which has gained popularity due to a steadily increasing user base.
Users can play files stored locally, be it in RAM or on a memory card. Also, the wireless connectivity features of Windows Mobile 2003 permits Pocket Player to stream audio files over HTTP connections, and Internet radio stations are supported. In addition, streaming audio files over a user's local network is supported. Advanced audio features such as gapless playback, or track crossfading are also part of Pocket Player 2.0's feature set.
A ten-band audio equalizer and preamplifier control is supported for MP3 and Ogg Vorbis media formats. By using these controls (or the 12 included presets), users can customize the sound for playback on headphones, car stereos, any other speaker setting, or to adjust to the genre of the music being played. Support for bookmarked files and track positions are also included.
Additionally, users can access media on a device by using the "Local Content" playlist, which is updated whenever a storage card is inserted or removed, or when files are copied to the device. An integrated playlist manager keeps track of all the playlists on the device, and playlists can be sorted by artist or song title as well as randomized. Pocket Player supports M3U, PLS, ASX, PLT, and LST playlists, allowing users to access existing playlists with Pocket Player.
Mapping hardware buttons to playback controls is also supported, as is shutting off the device display after a specified amount of time to conserve battery life. Track seeking is also supported, and enhanced for audio book users. Through the use of the Seek Menu, a user can resume playing a track where it was left off, or jump a specified amount backwards or forwards in a track.
Pocket Player 2.0 is available as a free, 30-day trial from the Conduits web site, while the commercial version sells for $19.95 USD. Upgrades are priced at $9.95 USD for returning customers.
