New low-end 3100, accessories from NokiaBy Jørgen Sundgot, Monday 16 June 2003
At its annual press update in Helsinki today, Nokia showed its new 3100 low-end model. Also on display: new accessories - and a brief glimpse of this year's Nokia Game.

Placing personalisation increasingly in the spotlight, Nokia today launched the latest model in its low-end 3000 series, the 3100, at its annual press update held in Helsinki. Aimed at style-conscious mobile consumers, the Nokia 3100 offers a colour screen, MMS support and game features through both support for J2ME as well as enhanced game covers - a concept originally introduced with the 3510.

Nokia puts the spotlight on personalisation on gaming in its new low-end model, the 3100
Users will find pre-installed animated screen savers and wallpapers on the 3100, as well as polyphonic ringtones. Also, the phone is the first from Nokia to offer a new generation of Xpress-on gaming cover enhancements. Sold separately, the Xpress-on gaming cover features "electroluminescence" - special light effects that sparkle through translucent faceplates in rhythm with ringing tones, games, alarm and other phone functions.

Featuring an 8-way rocker, Nokia aims for Xpress-on gaming covers to enable developers to create games offering advanced gameplay experience and incorporating electroluminescent light effects in sync with specific games.

In conjunction with the gaming cover features, the Series 40 powered 3100 also offers a 4-way rocker, a 128 x 128 pixel resolution display and comes with thre pre-loaded J2ME game titles including Snake EX2, Bowling and Beach Rally. Additionally, the phone is compatible with J2ME game titles available for other Series 40 models including the 5510, 6100, 6610, 7250 and more.

At the update, Nokia also introduced several accessories to accompany the Nokia 3100 and other Nokia models, including the Nokia Fun Camera. A stand-alone VGA camera with its own viewfinder, flash and power supply, the Fun Camera boasts 8 MB of memory, can store up to 50 images, is powered by 2 AAA batteries and can be attached to compatible Nokia phones with a Pop-Port connector. Also announced today was the the Nokia Radio Headset, a combination stereo FM radio with a display and headset which either clips onto a lapel or slips into a shirt pocket.

This year's edition of the Nokia Game was also mentioned briefly at the update, where Nokia displayed a teaser video stating that the game - still featuring a plot not too much different from previous games - would begin on September 12. New as of this year, however, is a Nokia Game application for the Nokia N-Gage which will offer multiplayer functionality by means of Bluetooth and GPRS.

Weighing a mere 85 grams, the tri-band Nokia 3100 phone operates on GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz bands, and is planned to start shipping during the third quarter 2003, in Europe, Africa and Asia Pacific.
