Mobile phones as anti-terrorism toolsBy Jørgen Sundgot, Tuesday 3 June 2003
A new homeland security alert system from AlertsUSA aims to stream audio warnings to the mobile phones of American citizens.

The task of communicating official terror threats and disaster information to the general public gets a new twist as AlertsUSA launches its new wireless audio streaming alert service in partnership with XSVoice, a wireless platform and application developer. Together, the two companies aim to deliver security threat information via live and on-demand wireless audio streaming and SMS alerts to mobile phone users in America.

The AlertsUSA service will provide instant notification of domestic terror alerts, warnings and other related information issued by the Department of Homeland Security, Department of Justice/FBI/National Infrastructure Protection Center, Department of State and a number of other related federal agencies.

Initially notifying users via a text message, the service in turn connects the user to listen to a live or on-demand audio broadcast relating to the alert. A weekly audio update is also provided summarizing key homeland security-related information, as well as reinforcing government messages urging vigilance and to remain alert for various types of threats.

The news of AlertsUSA's alert service follows close on the heels of the introduction of several anti-terrorism applications for handhelds, none of which offer instant notification but rather focus on providing users with as much information as possible concerning what to do should certain scenarios arise.

Those in AlertsUSA's wireless service may sign up through the company's web site AlertsUSA, where six months of service can be purchased for $29.99 USD.
