New BlackBerries boast color, tri-bandBy Jørgen Sundgot, Monday 2 June 2003
RIM's new BlackBerry 7230 represents the company's first stab at introducing colour - and it joins the new BlackBerry 6230 in offering tri-band GSM connectivity.

Research In Motion (RIM) today unveiled two new BlackBerry wireless handhelds for the European market. The BlackBerry 7230 and BlackBerry 6230 support worldwide international roaming on GSM/GPRS networks, and like their predecessors deliver e-mail, phone, SMS, browser and organizer functionality all in one device - but with two twists: a color display, and tri-band GSM connectivity.

The BlackBerry 7230 is RIM's first attempt at a colour version of its popular wireless hadhelds
The BlackBerry 7230 is RIM's first attempt at introducing a handheld with a colour display, and follows the form factor and design of the 6200 series which has previously seen two models in the European market. The 6230, on its side, features a similar monochrome display as found in the previous 6210 and 6220 models.

Both handhelds introduce a trait that is brand new for BlackBerry handhelds: tri-band GSM connectivity, allowing users to roam in virtually any GSM network around the globe - provided roaming agreements are in place.

The handhelds include 16 MB of flash memory and 2 MB SRAM, and come with rechargeable/removable lithium batteries and Universal Serial Bus (USB) connectivity for battery charging. Also, both the display and keyboard are backlit, and as with previous models the 7230 and 6230 make use of internal antennas to provied both voice and data connectivity.

As with other BlackBerry handhelds, the 7230 and 6230 will connect either standalone or through server software from RIM to provide access to up to 10 e-mail accounts hosted with Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino or popular ISPs. The e-mail client also includes the ability to read and forward attachments in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint format, as well as Adobe Acrobat (PDF). Also, the handhelds support SMS.

The new, Java-based 7230 and 6230 models are available from today in Germany and Austria as part of T-Mobile International's retail launch of BlackBerry. Details on pricing and roaming services are available from T-Mobile International.

Additional hi-res pictures of the BlackBerry 6230 and 7230 models are available on the following pages.
