Sony's new CLIE PEG-NX73V and PEG-NX80V high-end models have been introduced in Japan: both sport Palm OS 5, cameras, 200 MHz ARM processors and CompactFlash expansion slots.

Confirming yet again that there is seemingly no end to the number of models Sony will churn out in its CLIE line of Palm OS-based handhelds, the Japanese division of the consumer electronics giant has now introduced two new CLIEs. The PEG-NX73V and PEG-NX80V are both high-end models and feature fairly similar specifications, yet there are some important differences.

Both models are powered by 200 MHz ARM based processors and run Palm OS 5, similar to other recent handhelds from the company such as the PEG-NX70V and PEG-TG50. They also make use of the now-common Sony high-res displays, offering a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels and using 16-bit TFT technology. In the memory department, the two models differ slightly, with the PEG-NX73V offering 16 MB of RAM and 32 MB of ROM where the PEG-NX80V offers 32 MB of both.

Another area where the two models differ is that of cameras. While the PEG-NX73V sports a fairly common VGA 640 x 480 pixel resolution camera, the PEG-NX80V has taken a cue from Sony's mammoth PEG-NZ90 and boasts a 1.3 megapixel camera with a maximum resolution of 1280 x 960 pixels.

CompactFlash Type II expansion slots are included in both handhelds, for which Sony has incorporated a rather novel design where hinged slots swing out from the main body when opened. Expansion cards - provided they do not protrude beyond the length of the slot - could theoretically be accessed regardless of whether the slot is open or closed, however none of Sony's currently available proprietary expansion cards would fit the closed position.

Also, both of the new models feature support for Sony's proprietary Magic Gate, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Duo and Memory Stick Pro expansion card formats.

Measuring 132 x 72 x 22 mm, the PEG-NX73V and PEG-NX80V are both similar in shape and size to Sony's previously introduced swivel clamshell/tablet handhelds, a trend which started with the introduction of the PEG-NR70 and PEG-NR70V and includes an integrated thumbboard. Respectively, the two handhelds weigh in at 230 g and 235 g, also making them some of the heaviest handhelds on the market today.

According to Sony, expected availability for the Sony CLIE PEG-NX73V and PEG-NX80V is set to June 7 and June 28, respectively. Both models will sell bundled with a USB cradle, an AC adapter, an AC cord, a set of stereo headphones with remote control capabilities, an expanding stylus and a hand strap.
