TomTom Bluetooth GPS receiver unveiledBy Jørgen Sundgot, Tuesday 13 May 2003
Shortly following the exposure of the product on several enthusiast sites, Palmtop Software has now gone public with news of its new Bluetooth-enabled GPS receiver.

Palmtop Software has announced the upcoming availability of the Wireless GPS receiver for TomTom Navigator 2 under its TomTom brand. To be used in combination with the latest version of the company's GPS navigation software for Pocket PCs, Palmtop Software claims its new receiver is not only the smallest but also the lightest Bluetooth-enabled GPS receiver on the market.

Drawing on its use of Bluetooth technology, the Wireless GPS receiver allows users more flexibility in the use of GPS to navigate as it removes the need for stretching cables. The unit comes with several mounting options, and is powered by a rechargeable battery which according to Palmtop Software ensures five hours of continuous operation.

The Wireless GPS receiver is also available as a standalone product and is compatible with any Bluetooth-enabled device supporting the Serial Port Profile (SPP), which then can be used in combination with GPS enabled software. Compatible devices include Sony Ericsson P800, Nokia 7650 and 3650, Sony Vaio also any Bluetooth-enabled Pocket PC or notebook.

TomTom Navigator 2 and the TomTom Wireless GPS receiver will be available in June 2003 from leading retailers throughout the Benelux region, and from all major European retailers as a full product as of July at a recommended retail price of £349 GBP including VAT. Also, the TomTom Wireless GPS Receiver will be available as of June as a standalone product for the recommended retail price of £249 GBP including VAT.
