Users of J2ME-enabled phones who have grown weary of sending traditional SMS messages with high fees now have an alternative - and it's close to free.
By means of some creative coding and a slight touch of ingenuity, a lone coder has come up with an application that allows users of devices with support for J2ME to send SMS messages for free - almost. SMSSend 2.0 is a new application which installs on everything from mobile phones to smartphones such as the Nokia 7650 and 3650, and draws on the SMS sending service of instant messaging provider ICQ.

Through establishing an Internet connection and emulating a web browser, SMSSend 2.0 is capable of using the existing account of a registered ICQ user to access ICQ's SMS service, and from there send messages to mobile phone users on a wide range of networks all over the globe (a complete list of supported networks is available from the ICQ web site).
According to the anonymous coder behind the SMSSend web site and application, sending an SMS message using the application typically requires 1 KB of data to be transferred. The application also integrates an address book feature since J2ME applications cannot access embedded address books.
Considering the current costs of sending SMS messages, using SMSSend could prove by far less expensive than the traditional means by which SMS messages are sent: through the SMS network service of an operator. And, to top it all off, the application itself is available as a free download from the SMSSend web site.
