Remote controlling Nokia smartphonesBy Jørgen Sundgot, Wednesday 23 April 2003
With Remote S60 from mobileways, owners of Nokia 7650 and 3650 Series 60-based smartphones can now control and work with their handsets through a Windows-based PC.

Sporting a range of advanced capabilities, Nokia's Series 60-based 7650 and 3650 smartphones both rank at the very top of the smartphone bestseller list - a fact partly due to the lack of proper competition, with the exception of the Orange SPV and Sony Ericsson P800. Common for all of these devices, however, is that users at times find it hard to input data at a rate that matches the advanced capabilities of their operating systems.

A new software suite from Germany-based mobileways, dubbed Remote S60, lets Series 60 owners work their way around this by allowing them to remote control their handset from any Windows-based PC over Infrared or Bluetooth. The application offers navigation as well as text input, opening up for areas such as typing in an SMS or MMS at a faster pace than what would be possible by means of multi-tap or T9 predictive text input. Other uses include observing what the camera of the phone sees, playing games and also record action as it takes place.

Ill: mobileways

According to mobileways, Remote S60 offers better performance when using a Bluetooth connection rather than infrared, and integrates with the Nokia PC Suite and its underlying Symbian mRouter to ease connection. In addition, users can also connect over the TCP/IP protocol or a TCP/IP Relay Proxy, effectively enabling remote control using the Internet as a connection bearer.

Other features include reducing the number of colors transmitted to either 256 or 16 shades of gray to decrease latency, as well as a JPEG mode for better performance when using the Camera application.

A free, fully functional 14-day trial version of the application is available for download, while the full version can be purhcased for $14.95 USD.
