After months of waiting, nudging, demanding, and begging, CLIE users finally have drivers to use CompactFlash memory cards on select CLIE models. But the drivers aren't from Sony.
After many false starts, false hopes, and user agitation, CompactFlash drivers for the Sony CLIE PEG-NX70v, PEG-NX60, and PEG-NZ90 are finally available. The drivers aren't from Sony, however, but from independent developer EruWare.
The EruWare drivers support most major CF storage cards on the market in both read- and write-mode. That includes cards up to 1 GB in size, in both read- and write-mode. The IBM MicroDrive is also supported, although read-only. The drivers allow programs to access CF memory cards the same way they would a Memory Stick using the now-standard Palm OS VFS API.
In order for a program to support the CF slot, either the program must support multiple cards or else the user must remove the Memory Stick card while the CF card is in use. The Palm OS card handing system supports up to four cards, but the only models to date that actually include multiple card slots are the HandEra 330 and education-targeted AlphaSmart Dana. As a result, many developers have taken a shortcut and hard-coded their applications for one card slot, which means they won't be able to support the CF slot that the EruWare drivers make available. Developers of those programs will have to update their card support.
The EruWare CF drivers are available now from the EruWare web site for $27 USD.
