Sony softly adds a bigger stick

Sony has now publicly released a patch for selected CLIE handhelds to allow them to use Sony's Memory Stick Pro flash cards. Memory Stick Pro is Sony's new version of their Memory Stick flash card format, designed to allow for cards larger than 128 MB but requires new hardware and software support. The upgrade, which works only on Sony's Palm OS 5 models (PEG-NX70v, PEG-NX60, PEG-NZ90, PEG-TG50), allows users of those devices to use Memory Stick Pro cards in their handhelds. While the update does enable the user to utilize almost all of the functionality of Memory Stick Pro cards, it does not allow for the playback of Sony's ATRAC3 format if the files were encoded using the SonicStage program included with Sony's CLIE line. Sony has not given a reason for that limitation, but it likely has to do with the MagicGate-encryption built into both the ATRAC3 format and the Memory Stick Pro. MagicGate is Sony's so-called Digital Rights Management system that works by restricting what users are able to do with data files.
The CLIE Memory Stick Pro update is available free of charge from the Sony support site.
