PalmSource has recently announced that Palm OS 5.2 will support up to 128 MB of system RAM, eight times that available on any currently-shipping Palm OS device. The new memory subsystem, which was developed by Palm and PalmSource, is now part of Palm OS 5.2 and will be available to all Palm OS licensees. Of course, not all devices will offer 12 MB of RAM, as that will be up to manufacturers to decide.
The original Palm OS 1.0 of the Pilot 1000 supported only 256 KB of RAM. Each new version has allowed for more maximum RAM, but there have also been CPU-based limitations. The Motorola 68k-based Dragonball processors, used on all Palm OS 4.x and earlier handhelds, ran into a memory ceiling at 8 or 24 MB, depending on the version. ARM-based processors have a much higher RAM limit, but that still requires support from the OS. With the new upgrade, Palm OS 5.2 will be able to support as much RAM as many Pocket PC and Linux-based devices do, while still having a much smaller average program size and eXecute-In-Place technology for more efficent RAM usage.
