New models from Nokia for the U.S. market, slated for introduction in the 2nd and 4th quarters, combine color displays with CDMA2000 1xRTT, GPS, J2ME and more.
Further ramping up its efforts in the U.S. market, Nokia recently announced two new mobile phones with color displays - the 3586i and the 6585 - aimed at the mass market. Both phones run on CDMA networks and support 1xRTT for packet-based data transfers, and are also GPS-enabled in compliance with U.S. regulatory organ FCC's E-911 requirements.
The tri-mode CDMA2000 1X Nokia 3586i phone is the newest member of Nokia's CDMA handset lineup and sports a range of features. These include a 96 x 65 pixel resolution color display, J2ME support, 1cRTT, polyphonic MIDI ringtones, graphical caller ID icons and optional Xpress-on electroluminsecent active covers. Shipments of the Nokia 3586i, which is also GPS-enabled, are expected to begin in the second quarter of 2003.

Other features range from an embedded Internet browser to an optional USB data cable which lets users connect to a PC and utilize the phone as a modem - which also offers synchronization of data between the phone's integrated 500-entry phonebook and calendar with a desktop PIM application. Also on the list: voice dialing support for up to 25 numbers and voice memo recording.
The Nokia 6585 phone will also support CDMA2000 1xRTT, and weighs in at a minute 3.1 ounces. Like the 3586i, it offers support for J2ME, but also have a few tricks of its own up the sleeve such as an integrated FM radio, a built-in speakerphone, MMS support and compatibility with Nokia's optional Camera Headset accessory. Shipments of the Nokia 6585 phone are expected to begin during the fourth quarter of 2003.
Other features in the 6585 range from polyphonic MIDI ring tones to a 128 x 128 pixel color display, the common suite of Nokia PIM applications, an embedded mobile Internet browser and also GPS. Also, like the 3586i, the 6585 is capable of connecting to a PC via USB to act as a modem - and in addition, offers the same functionality over infrared.
