Samsung plans combined GSM, CDMA phoneBy Jørgen Sundgot, Thursday 27 March 2003
Courtesy of Qualcomm's MSM6300 Mobile Station Modem chipset, Samsung is now working to develop the world's first multi-mode, multi-band GSM/GPRS/CDMA/1xRTT handset.

In a world largely divided between CDMA and GSM cellular network standards, Samsung's new and unprecedented project is sure to raise a few eyebrows: having teamed up with Qualcomm, the Korean manufacturer is now working to develop the world's first handset which will not only provide GSM/GPRS connectivity, but also CDMA/1xRTT. When the handset will be available is as of yet unclear, but the companies hint it might be out as soon as later this year.

Using Qualcomm's MSM6300 Mobile Station Modem chipset and system software with its GSM1x solution, Samsung currently has its engineers busy with developing and delivering what is to become the world's first multimode, multiband GSM1x handset. According to Qualcomm, its MSM6300 chipset is the first product to integrate the GSM and CDMA modems into a single chip solution, this enabling Samsung to design multimode handsets using previous single-mode form factors.

The multimode, multiband GSM1x handset will allow GSM subscribers to roam across GSM and CDMA2000 networks with one SIM subscription, providing world travelers with a true global roaming phone. Additionally, the GSM1x multimode handset will allow operators with both GSM and CDMA2000 networks to offer CDMA2000 data and Launchpad applications to their GSM subscribers.

GSM1x is a CDMA2000 solution aimed at GSM operators in any band, combining CDMA2000 1xRTT and GSM-MAP technologies. According to Qualcomm, GSM1x maintains all key features and services inherent in the system, with a GSM1x handset accepting a GSM SIM card and communicating with the GSM-MAP core network. The aim of the solution is to increase an operator's voice and data capacity while enabling an overlay of CDMA2000 on a GSM network.
