Courtesy of Austria-based independent developer Philipp Schmid, an Ogg Vorbis player for the UIQ platform - on which Sony Ericsson's P800 is based - is now in the works.
Although being far from as popular as MP3, the open Ogg Vorbis file format is increasingly gaining support - and particularly so amongst Linux users. Developed as an alternative to MP3, which requires makers of software incorporating MP3 playback capabilities to pay licensing fees, Ogg Vorbis delivers audio quality fully on par with MP3; and like MP3 offers no digital rights management features. Now, an Ogg Vorbis player is in the works for Sony Ericsson's UIQ-based P800.

Created by independent developer Philipp Schmid, the AudioMagic player currently supports the Ogg Vorbis file format only, but the author is considering adding support for the MP3 format at a later point in time. Rather uniquely, the application supports both modes in which the Sony Ericsson P800 operates; full-screen, and small-screen - the latter enabling a user interface which can be operated one-handedly. Increasing or decreasing the playback volume is controlled by means of the jog dial, as is pausing and playing files.
