Motorola unveils E390, C230 mobile phonesBy Jørgen Sundgot, Wednesday 19 March 2003
The tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz E390 is aimed at youths as Motorola's second-ever mobile phone with a color display; the C230 is its cheap and affordable counterpart.

Motorola has unveiled two new additions to its mobile handset portfolio, both targeted towards the youth market. With a focus on gaming, entertainment and music, the E390 and C230 join a line-up of nine other new Motorola handsets unveiled earlier this year at Motorola's "HelloMoto" event in Shanghai and the GSM World Congress in Cannes.

The Motorola E390 is the manufacturer's second ever with a color display
The Motorola E390 features several advanced in sound, lighting, vibration and photo technologies for Motorola, and offers tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz connectivity. Equipped with a new dual speaker technology system, Motorola goes as far as claiming that the E390 is capable of creating live surround-sound through its 24-channel, 3D polyphonic speaker system.

But that's not the end of the music features in the E390, which also comes with an embedded MotoMixer ring tone composer to enable consumers to create their own, unique ringtones by adding or removing instruments and creating their own rhythm. Also present: the option to add accessories such as a FM Stereo Radio headset or MP3 Player.

Multiple lights on the front and sides of the E390 can be set to light up to the beat of a ringtone or when a car crashes playing the pre-installed MotoGP game. Also, vibration capabilities can be tied to similar events. And lastly, the E390 also features an integrated digital camera and MMS support.

The Motorola C230 is a cheaper alternative to the E390, and offers dual-band GSM 900/1800 MHz along with support for SMS and EMS. As with the E390, the C230 lets users download new wallpapers, screensavers or overall themes for personalization, and also offers 16-channel polyphonic ringtones. Also, the C230 offers changeable outside covers.

Motorola said both models are expected to be available towards the end of 2003, however the company did not provide any information on their expected pricing.

Additional hi-res pictures of the Motorola C230 and E390 are available on the following pages.
