Through alliances with four wireless companies, AccuWeather will deliver weather alerts through a number of wireless channels including MMS, BREW, J2ME and streaming video.
Weather affects almost every person and a majority of businesses every day; a fact which has propelled a certain few companies to become global weather powerhouses. One of these, AccuWeather, has now announced strategic alliances with four wireless providers to distribute weather information wirelessly and develop weather-based products for mobile platforms. For wireless users, the deal could mean always up-to-date weather alerts delivered directly through their mobile phones.
Under an agreement with InfoSpace, which AccuWeather has worked with since 2000, the two companies are teaming to market and deliver mobile push-messaging applications to wireless operators. This includes using MMS and other delivery formats to provied 5-day forecasts, radar and severe weather alerts.
AccuWeather has also announced a strategic partnership with eMbience, a global wireless software developer, to create wireless applications for AccuWeather content using BREW, J2ME and potentially other platforms. eMbience has so far developed applications for AccuWeather that will deliver weather content including 10-day forecasts, current conditions, hour-by-hour forecasts and radar animation graphics. Future enhancements will include weather watches and warnings.
A deal with Israel-based Emblaze Systems will let AccuWeather distribute streaming and customized weather content to various mobile platforms, and will most likely be targeted towards 3G operators. Also; under the terms of an agreement with Summus, AccuWeather will provide content for Summus' BlueFuel-powered applications that will be marketed to carriers worldwide.
