Justin's PalmbotBy Jørgen Sundgot, Tuesday 24 April 2001
As it seems, several people are trying to merge handhelds and robotics these days, with Justin Osborn being the latest addition to the ranks.

Most of you have probably read about the Palm Pilot Robot Kit (PPRK) being developed by Greg Reshko at the Carnegie Mellon University, where a Palm Pilot is being used to control a fully autonomous robot that anyone can build (provided their cash flow is sufficient). Well, Justin Osborn read about it too, and whipped up his very own robot called PalmBot, which is controlled by a Palm IIIe.

It's alive and kicking, and might cost you a whole lot less than the Palm Pilot Robot Kit from Carnegie Mellon
As Justin himself writes on the PalmBot homepage: "I've been working with robotics for two years, mostly because our school entered the U.S. FIRST Robotics Competition. When I saw the Palm Pilot Robot Kit done by Greg Reshko at Carnegie Mellon, I became interested in making my own robot, but I figured I could do it without using expensive materials and sensors like the PPRK."

Justin's web page tells you roughly how to get started and build what he has built, but what he also considers to be important is that it'll get you started on your own personal robotics project - which might just end up in something totally different from what he has created.

The instructions gives you an overview of what is needed and what has to be done, as well as what materials you could use and there is also an example software application to control the robot written in C on Linux, available with source code and binary files.

So what are you waiting for? :)
