Sony Ericsson shows T606, T608 modelsBy Jørgen Sundgot, Monday 10 March 2003
Two new CDMA models for the North American market have been announced by Sony Ericson - both with color displays, and one of which will be the first CDMA phone with Bluetooth.

Following up on its launch of the Sony Ericson T310 and T610 models for the European market, Sony Ericsson has also unveiled two new CDMA models for the North American market. The T606 and T608 both feature 16-bit color displays, and will respectively offer offer BREW and J2ME functionality to customers - while the latter will also be the first CDMA mobile phone to come with integrated Bluetooth.

Sony Ericson's T608 and T606 will arrive in North America some time in the second quarter
Both of the new models feature the new style Sony Ericsson has introduced for its mobile phones, as well as the new user interface the manufacturer will implement in all of its new models. Navigating the 128 x 128 pixel displays and their menus is conducted by means of a five-way navigational joystick and soft keys, and gamers will also be happy to know that both models offer simultaneous key press functionality for an enhanced gaming experience.

Also common for both phones is 16-voice polyphonic ringtones, as well as several personalization options including picture caller ID, customizable backgrounds and screensavers. Similarly, the two phones share voice operation functionality to allow hands-free dialing of stored contacts.

What separates the phones, except for their physical measurements, is mostly their support for different application platforms. While the T608 supports J2ME, the T606 supports BREW, meaning either of the two phones could be picked up by North American carriers who tend to standardize on just one of these platforms.

The T608 measures 4.2 x 1.9 x 0.75 inches and weighs a light 3.5 ounces, while the T606 also weighs in at 3.5 ounces and is also slightly thicker than the T608 at 4.2 x 1.9 x 0.79 inches. Both models will be commercially available in the second quarter of 2003, according to Sony Ericsson.

Additional hi-res pictures of the Sony Ericsson T606 and T608 are available on the following pages.
