Sony releases CLIE SJ22, nee SJ30By Larry Garfield, Friday 7 March 2003
It's Sony Week, apparently. Yet another CLIE handheld is here, this time the CLIE SJ22. It's not all that new, however. It's essentially a rebadged SJ30.

The latest in a series of announcements this week is the Hong Kong and European release of the CLIE PEG-SJ22 Palm OS handheld. The SJ22 does not break any new ground, however. It's specifications are almost the same as Sony's earlier device, the PEG-SJ30.

The SJ22 is essentially the same as the SJ30
The SJ22 is standard fair for a modern Sony CLIE. It measures 71.8 x 104.0 x 16.8 mm and weighs in at 139 g. It's casing is the same as its predecessors, the SJ20 and the SJ30. It is a bit shorter than a traditional Palm OS handheld, and has all the usual buttons of a Sony, including the scroll wheel and back button on the left side. The screen is a standard Sony HighRes 320x320 screen, still with no virtual Graffiti area. Of course it also includes a Memory Stick slot, although unlike most CLIEs it is not capable of reading Sony's encryption-restricted MagicGate Memory Sticks.

The SJ22 is a Palm OS 4.1 device, running a 33 MHz Motorola Dragonball processor. It offers 16 MB of RAM and 4 MB of ROM. It runs off of an internal Lithium-ion battery. The SJ22 does not have an included mp3 player, but Sony does offer an mp3 accessory.

On the software side, the SJ22 bundles the standard assortment of Sony software and 3rd party software. That includes Palm Desktop and the standard Palm OS suite, as well as Kinoma player, Photostand, World Alarm Clock, and so on.

The CLIE PEG-SJ22 is available now in Hong Kong for 1780 HKD, or about $230 USD. It is expected in the US within the next few weeks as well.

A high-resolution image of the SJ22 is available on the following page.
