Running Voice has made available a scaled-down version of its Pocket PC VoIP software featuring Global IP Sound's GIPS VoiceEngine, aimed at WLAN-using workgroups.
Sweden-based Pocket Presence has now launched a scaled-down edition of its high-end Running Voice IP Professional VoIP Pocket PC client, featuring Global IP Sound's GIPS VoiceEngine for improved performance over WLAN networks. Called Running Voice IP Light, the new solution is targeted at workgroups using WLAN to communicate, and unlike Running Voice IP Professional does not incorporate advanced functionality for connecting to existing VoIP infrastructure or PSTN gateways.

The aim of the new solution is to bring costs down for workgroups requiring simplified VoIP functionality over traditional WLAN setups, while offering a setup designed specifically for maximum performance over such networks. Running Voice IP Light uses the GIPS VoiceEngine from Global IP Sound, which is typically configured with GIPS SoundWare modules such as GIPS NetEQ, GIPS Enhanced G.711 and GIPS iPCM-wb modules to reduce the effects of packet loss, delay and jitter.
According to Pocket Presence, Running Voice IP Light is as a result of using the GIPS VoiceEngine able to offer better than PSTN voice quality, even in conditions where there is up to 30 percent packet loss. Also, the copmany said its use of this technology improved performance under challenging conditions introduced by WLANs, such as the hand-over of a call to the next available network node (when users roam between hotspots).
The Running Voice IP Light Package itself consists of Pocket PC and PC clients optimised for wireless VoIP, and a server which can be installed on any PC in a WLAN network. Using a 'Find the Server' feature, users are able to automatically locate a server, after which they can dial other users on the network by means of a user@server type address format.
Only Pocket PC 2002 devices are supported by Running Voice IP Light, including the HP iPAQ H3600, H3700, H3800, H3900 and H5400 series (some require upgrades to Pocket PC 2002), as well as the Toshiba e740.
