The tri-band GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900 MHz SX1 has strips of keys built in to each side of the phone, instead of an ordinary keypad, which acccording to Siemens has been done to give the SX1 a sleeker shape. Between these, Siemens has fitted a 16-bit color screen, joined by central navigation keys required by the Series 60 platform just below the screen. Not only sporting a greater color depth than the Nokia 7650, the display of the SX1 also has higher vertical resolution than other Series 60 phones with its 176 x 220 pixel resolution.
Other features of the handset include an embedded video player, camcorder, music player and FM radio, along with typical PIM applications including a calendar, address book, notes and todo. Also present is a voice recorder, along with voice dialing and voice control, and support for J2ME applications and games.
Messaging and connectivity features include support for SMS, EMS, MMS and e-mail (POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP standards), as well as IrDA and Bluetooth. The SX1 also features USB connectivity, which is new to Series 60 devices, and a WAP 2.0 browser with support for xHTML. A Class 10 GPRS module provides packet-based Internet connectivity, and the SX1 is also capable of synchronizing information both remotely and locally - the latter with Microsoft Outlook and Lotus Notes. An MMC card expansion slot is also present, allowing users to expand the memory of the device with storage cards which have a current maximum of 512 MB.
Siemens did not disclose any information concerning the expected talk, standby or other usage times for the SX1, but listed the battery of the device as being a 1000 mAh, Lithium Polymer model. Its weight was listed as 110 g.
Built on the open-source Symbian platform, the SX1 features a tailored Siemens mobile version of the Series 60 interface and application platform. The SX1 will according to Siemens be available throughout Europe and Asia within the first half of 2003.
