Samsung shows GSM/GPRS i700 Pocket PCBy Jørgen Sundgot, Monday 17 February 2003
At the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, Microsoft and Samsung kicked off this week's line-up of big announcements, unveiling a GSM/GPRS edition of its i700 Phone Edition device.

Today at the 3GSM World Congress 2003 in Cannes, Microsoft and Samsung Electronics officially unveiled the Samsung Windows Powered MITs (Mobile Intelligent Terminal by Samsung) SGH-i700. The device, a GSM/GPRS edition of the CDMA version announced earlier this year at CES, combines advanced features such as a 300 MHz XScale processor, an integrated digital camera and GSM/GPRS functionality.

Samsung's SPH-i700 is the CDMA version of the newly announced SGH-i700
Shown as a preview and little else, neither Microsoft nor Samsung provided any technical specifications with regard to the SGH-i700. Previously, however, Samsung lifted the veil exclusively for infoSync to provide specifications for the CDMA version of the i700, the SPH-i700. Shown earlier this year at CES, the SPH-i700 is likely slated for an introduction in Sprint's PCS network in the U.S. some time during 2003, despite the lack of official information concerning availability and pricing.

Although its specifications are not set in stone, the SPH-i700 will according to Samsung most likely include a 300 MHz XScale processor, 64 MB of RAM, an SD/MMC Card expansion slot and a 3.5" 16-bit reflective TFT display. Also, one of its most anticipated features is the integrated 16-bit digital camera with VGA resolution, making the SPH-i700 - and now the SGH-i700, created in its image - the first Pocket PC to be announced with such a feature.

As with the launch of the SPH-i700, Microsoft and Samsung were also unwilling to provide any more tangible information concerning availability and pricing for the SGH-i700. The only vague statement touching on the issue said the SGH-i700 would "soon" be available on GSM/GPRS wireless networks - not touching on whether the two companies have Asian, European or American networks in mind, and neither on which bands the device will support at the time of launch.

An additional hi-res picture of the Samsung SPH-i700 is available on the following page. No pictures of the SGH-i700 were released at the time of announcement, but it is assumed that the physical appearance of the CDMA and GSM editions will be an exact match.
