Palm entering China, tooBy Larry Garfield, Thursday 12 December 2002
Hot on the heels of the announcement that PalmSource has signed up two new licensees for the Chinese market, Palm itself has stated that they will be making a push into China as well. According to research firm IDC, China is the largest handheld-device market in the Asia Pacific region, which excludes Japan, and will account for 70% of total shipments in the region in calendar 2002. IDC also said China is expected to generate 27% year-on-year growth in 2003. Palm expects to release China-targeted devices in the first half of 2003.

Palm will join existing licensee Acer, who already has several devices available in the Asian market, and new licensees Group Sense Limited and Legend Group Limited. Legend in particular is already showing off hardware prototypes, including a 240x320 screen with virtual Graffiti and a flash slot. Although the 240x320 resolution is not very common in the Palm world, currently used only on the HandEra 330, it is directly supported by the new PalmSource High-Density API. Whether Legend is using the PalmSource API or the HandEra API is unclear.
