Tipic's new J2ME instant messaging client is based on the open Jabber XMPP protocol, and lets owners of among other Series 60 devices IM with AIM, ICQ, MSNM and YIM users.
Despite mobile phones providing more or less the ideal platform for instant messaging - proved by the success of SMS, which contrary to IM does not even include presence features - there are few clients that provide users with a range of networks as wide as is available on the desktop. Tipic's new TipicME, a version of the company's desktop Jabber client, runs on J2ME capable devices including those based on Nokia's Series 60 platform, and gives access to a wide range of instant messaging networks through Jabber.

According to Tipic, TipicME can connect to Jabber servers through a wireless connection enhancer proxy to reduce the use of wireless bandwidth. Depending on features, the client takes up 60 Kb or less of memory, and Tipic aims the product at carriers and companies who want to rebrand the client as well letting users with existing Jabber registrations to its or other servers download the client from its website.
Through the J2ME Jabber client, users can gain access to other instant messaging solutions such as AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), ICQ, MSN Messenger (MSNM) and Yahoo! Instant Messenger (YIM) as long as the Jabber server a user connects offers support for users to do so.
