New Mio338 Pocket PC from MiTACBy Jørgen Sundgot, Wednesday 13 November 2002
New Pocket PCs seem to be abundant these days, and here's one more: MiTAC's new Mio338 joins the fray with an Intel XScale processor, 32 MB RAM and a price tag under $300 USD.

The Pocket PC market is currently undergoing somewhat of a revolution with low-cost devices popping up all over the place. From Toshiba's e310 and Viewsonic's V35 to Dell's two Axim X5 models, prices have dropped from being the highest on the market to undercutting Palm and Sony's latest and most advanced offerings - with hardware specifications that not only match but also surpass these devices in terms of pure MHz and RAM. Now, Taiwan-based MiTAC joins the low-cost fray.

Ill: MiTAC

MiTAC's new Mio338 Pocket PC, a product in its DigiWalker series, offers an Intel XScale PXA250 processor, a 3.5" 16-bit TFT transflective display, 32 MB of RAM and an SD/MMC Card expansion slot with SDIO support. MiTAC did not list at what speeds the XScale processor would operate, but end users are regardless likely to notice little performance improvement over 206 MHz ARM processors as the Pocket PC 2002 platform used by the device - along with most Pocket PC applications - do not make use of the full capabilities of XScale processors.

The Mio338 will come in a silver gray casing with the choice of a pastel blue and pastel pink finish, and MiTAC says its rechargeable Lithium ion battery will provide more than 8 hours of continous use. The company did not comment on which markets would see the introduction of the Mio338, but aims to sell it for less than $10,000 NT, or just below $300 USD.
