Multi-player, multi-platform strategy gamingBy Jørgen Sundgot, Wednesday 6 November 2002
Infinite Ventures is taking the wraps off Lands of Shadowgate, a multi-player, multi-platform Play-by-Sync RPG for Pocket PC, Smartphone 2002, and Palm OS 5 devices.

PDA games publisher Infinite Ventures has officially announced development of a new breed of multi-player, multi-platform strategy game dubbed Lands of Shadowgate, which will allow players with or without out a wireless connection to play against other players by means of the company's propritary Play-by-Sync technology. To support Pocket PC, Smartphone 2002 and Palm OS 5 platforms, the game is currently in a closed beta stage and will enter the open beta stage in December, while the final version is expected to ship in the first quarter of 2003.

Lands of Shadowgate is a turn-based strategy game that utilizes Infinite Venture’s proprietary Play-By-Sync technology, allowing PDA and smartphone owners to compete against each other. Based upon the fantasy world of Shadowgate, players rule a kingdom, build resources, and command armies as they attempt to conquer the lands surrounding Shadowgate. A number of evolving strategies await players as they train wizards, build barracks for mounted troops, and explore the lands with their scouts and assassins.

Play-by-Sync allows players without wireless connectivity to return to their desk and automatically sync the status of the game to the Lands of Shadowgate servers. The results of other player’s actions will be sent to back through the sync process, and their conquests within the Lands of Shadowgate will unfold accordingly. Players with access to wireless connectivity will be able to play the game with continous updates, and can pitch themselves both against other wireless and non-wireless players.

Infinite Ventures is currently also exploring conversion to the next generation of J2ME and BREW compatible phones, although no specific development is taking place at this point in time. Versions of the game in those formats would allow owners of a number of smartphones and mobile phones, including the Nokia 7650, Siemens S55, Sony Ericsson P800 and more.
