Agendus desktop companionBy Larry Garfield, Tuesday 22 October 2002
iambic Software's Agendus PIM replacement for the Palm OS, has a new friend: Agendus for Windows Standard Edition and Professional Edition.

iambic Software has released a desktop companion for their Agendus PIM replacement, formerly Action Names Datebook. The desktop program, iambic Agendus for Windows, comes in two versions, Standard Edition and Professional Edition.

Agendus for Windows is to Palm Desktop as Agendus for the Palm OS is to the Palm PIM apps
Agendus for the Palm OS is a Datebook and Address Book replacement that uses the existing databases to store contact and appointment information. For those features that Agendus adds over the built-in Datebook and Address Book, such as custom alarms, color highlighting, and event icons, it puts its information into the Note field of a given entry and flags it so that the program won't render that information as part of the note. Of course, other programs then do not understand Agendus' system, such as the built-in PIM apps, will simply display its extended information as part of the note. Palm Desktop and Microsoft Outlook on the desktop do not understand Agendus' extended features either, which means that users cannot take advantage of the extended features on the desktop, only on the handheld.

Agendus for Windows replaces Palm Desktop or Microsoft Outlook in the same way that Agendus on the Palm replaces the built-in PIM apps. It uses the same data files, meaning that the existing HotSync conduits handle all synchronization without any loss of information. Agendus for Windows understands all of Agendus' extended information, however, and can read and write all of its features. It also reimplements Agendus' sorting and filtering abilities, and includes an icon editor to edit event icons on the fly and assign them to events, as well as a separate conduit that automatically HotSyncs them to the handheld. The program also includes a mapping feature to download driving directions from a remote Internet source for any Contact List entry.

The Standard Edition of Agendus works with either Palm Desktop or Microsoft Outlook on Windows-based systems only and supports local data files only, while the Professional Edition adds support for Oulook when connected to a Microsoft Exchange server.

iambic Agendus for Windows Standard Edition retails for $39.95 USD, and iambic Agendus for Windows Professional Edition retails for $59.95 USD. Both are available from iambic's web store. Neither version icludes Agendus for Palm OS nor is there a discount available for Agendus for Palm OS users, but the Windows version will function independently of the handheld application.
