Screen shots of Zaurus SL-A300By Larry Garfield, Friday 30 August 2002
Sharps Linux-based Zaurus SL-5500 has a lot of features, but it's also a bit large for some people. Sharp also has a slim and sleek version available, the SL-A300, but it's only available in Japan. But guess who has screen shots?

While Sharp's only Zaurus model running the Lineo Linux-based OS in the US and Europe is the SL-5500, Japanese users have another option, the SL-A300. Released in June, the A300 is a much slimmer model than the Sl-5500. Losing the keyboard and Compact Flash slot, the A300 measures 69.4 x 113 x 12.5 mm and weighs a mere 120 grams. It also includes an improved interface for handling files on SD cards, providing a hierarchical file manager window in place of the over-simplified "Documents" tab on the SL-5500. as well as some nice new eyecandy themes.

Ill: Eon Games & Sharp

Aside from the improved interface and card handling, the SL-A300 is similar to the SL-5500. It runs an Intel XScale ARM processor at 200 MHz, compared to the SL-5500's StrongARM processor at 206 MHz. The screen is a QVGA 240x320 16-bit color display with front light. The handheld has 64 MB of RAM, although as with the SL-5500 only about 23 MB is available to install user applications. The rest is reserved as active memory. There is also a Windows-side program that lets the handheld be used as an SD card reader for the PC as well as take screen captures of the handheld. The SL-A330 can function in both Japanese and English modes.

Unfortunately, though, only users in Japan can get their hands on the SL-A300 for now. The rest of the world will have to settle for the pictures on the following pages.
