Wireless data on the Sharp ZaurusBy Larry Garfield, Saturday 24 August 2002
Sharp has teamed up with Verizon Wireless, Aether Systems, and Enfora to create Sharp Mobile Services. How does wireless Internet with a pocketable keyboard sound?

Sharp has announced the release of Sharp Mobile Services, a wireless Internet package for users of the GNU/Linux-based Sharp Zaurus SL-5500 and SL-5000d. Using the Verizon Wireless CDPD network in the United States, the package includes a Compact Flash CDPD modem from Enfora, the necessary software, and a Verizon Wireless account.

The PocketSpider IIc
The modem itself is the Enfora Pocket Spider IIc, a Compact Flash-based CDPD adapter. The Pocket Spider IIc about 2.3 cm thick total, sticking out somewhat from the back of the Zaurus, and extends a bit farther than the top of the device itself. It uses the CDPD 1.1 protocol for data transmission up to 19.2 kbps and supports RC4 encryption.

The service includes a software package provided by Aether Systems, which allows for a high level of compression to get the most out of CDPD's 19.2 kbps connection. The connection supports both the POP3 and IMAP email protocols, as well as web browsing. The service is proxy-based, and runs over Verizon's CDPD network, available in most major US cities.

Unusually, the service is available only at a flat monthly rate for unlimited air time. Most service providers prefer to use metered plans. The cost is $39.95 USD per month with a one year contract. There is also a $25 USD activation fee, and the modem itself is $149 USD after a $50 rebate.
