Q-Pad flip-keyboard, now for Palm m500 seriesBy Larry Garfield, Thursday 8 August 2002
tDevices has released a new version of their Q-Pad keyboard/case combo, this time for the Palm m500 series. It also works as a neat stand, too.

tDevice has announced the release of the m500 version of their Q-Pad flip keyboard. The Q-Pad is a fingerboard attachment for a Palm OS device that allows the keyboard itself to double as a flip-up case, and the back brace to double as a display stand.

It's a case, it's a keyboard, it's a stand! No, it's a Q-Pad
The Q-Pad case is made out of black leather, and is about the same size as a normal slim leather PDA case. Hidden inside the lining of the case, however, are two thin steel plates, one in front and one in back, to protect the device and screen from physical shock.

The m500-series device connects to the Q-Pad via the serial port, and the front and back of the case wrap up around it. That also makes it impossible to HotSync through the case. The case also includes two slots on the outside back of the case to hold Secure Digital memory cards, and an optional belt clip available.

The back of the case includes a plastic flip-down stand to hold the PDA at a 40 degree angle on a flat surface. The front of the case flips down to reveal a small keyboard recessed into the cover. The keyboard is a full QWERTY keyboard in a steep "smile" curve (meaning the keyboard curves down and back up, like a smiley face), and also includes Palm-specific function keys, such as toggling the backlight.

Like most mini-keyboards the Q-Pad doubles-up each letter key with a symbol key, but unlike most it includes a separate, dedicated numeric keypad, including simple mathematical symbols such as + and / on dedicated buttons. All buttons are hardened silicone rubber.

The Q-Pad for the m500 series is available now from the tDevice web site for $69.99 USD. Versions for the Palm V series and Handspring Visor Edge are also available. High resolution pictures of the new m500-series version are available on the following pages.
