Austria gets location servicesBy Oliver Thylmann, Monday 1 July 2002
Thanks to Nokia's mPosition solution, subscribers to Austrian carrier ONE's ONE COMPASS service now have access to a wide range of positioning and location-based services.

Austrian mobile network operator ONE launched ONE COMPASS, a new location-based service for mobile subscribers on June 11th. The system is based on Nokia's mPosition solution and will allow users to seamlessly receive a wide range of location-based services. The location-based information can be retrieved either by SMS or WAP.

With ONE COMPASS Leisure, customers are able to identify for instance the nearest live event, cinema or dance club. The service is capable of answering questions such as: "Which movie starts soon in the nearest cinema?" or "Where will the next jazz concert take place?" The category "Free admission" lists all events with no admission fees in the neighborhood, and with categories such as "live music" or "party" there are no obstacles to spending an evening creatively.

ONE COMPASS Information is another part of the service, which makes provisions for emergency situations. This service offers the addresses of the nearest hospitals, pharmacies, banks or police stations, but also those of restaurants. Users may select even further within individual categories, for instance according to the type of restaurant (Italian or Chinese) or opening hours (meals after midnight).

"We are delighted to bring this new advanced service to the Austrian market," says Joergen Bang-Jensen, CEO of ONE. "We see a clear demand in this market for services adding the dimension of location to a user's communication experience, making mobiles even more indispensable than they are today."

ONE's ONE COMPASS services are made possible by means of the Nokia mPosition solution, which locates a subscriber's physical location via the cell (a mix of several towers) his phone is currently connected to and presents them with new services made to order for that particular place on the map. The 3GPP standardized location methods used allow operators early access to specific markets with a cell ID-based solution, as well as with more accurate neighboring-cell measurement solutions.
