Qualcomm, Lucent demo UMTS packet dataBy Jørgen Sundgot, Wednesday 26 June 2002
Qualcomm and Lucent have conducted the world's first successful demonstration of transmitting UMTS packet data over commercial-grade 3G UMTS chipsets and infrastructure.

Qualcomm and Lucent Technologies today announced the completion of a series of third-generation (3G) Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) packet data calls, which according to the companies was the world's first such demonstration of UMTS packet data services with commercial 3G infrastructure and chipsets for mobile devices.

Using a commercial-sized QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies (QCT) UMTS test mobile featuring QCT's MSM5200 Mobile Station Modem (MSM) chipset and system software connected to a laptop, and UMTS infrastructure from Lucent, the two companies demonstrated high-speed streaming video, web browsing and access to a corporate network via an Internet Protocol (IP) virtual private network (VPN).

In addition to proving Qualcomm and Lucent's respective hardware as functional, the successful data calls are also the most recent proof that UMTS networks are reaching a point where they're not only technologically viable but also theoretically ready for implementation. In January, the two companies completed a series of voice calls using Qualcomm UMTS test handsets and Lucent UMTS infrastructure.

"QUALCOMM and Lucent both recognize the importance of high-speed packet data for 3G systems," said Luis Pineda, vice president of product management for QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. "Our two companies have been working together for several years to bring these capabilities to the marketplace, and this successful demonstration highlights our continued commitment to UMTS."
