F-Securing the Nokia 9200By Jørgen Sundgot, Tuesday 7 May 2002
F-Secure has brought a new family of security products for the Nokia 9200 Communicator series to the table, offering file encryption, SSH connectivity and virus protection.

While Nokia's 9200 Communicator series hasn't benefited from a vast software selection so far, signs are showing that support for the device - and the Symbian platform in general - is slowly increasing. The latest addition to the roster of applications available for the 9200 series is a suite from F-Secure that includes three security products; F-Secure FileCrypto, F-Secure SSH, and F-Secure Anti-Virus.

The recently announced Nokia 9210i, sporting more memory and thus improved abilities to run several applications simultaneously
F-Secure FileCrypto for Nokia 9290 Communicator is a content encryption application that provides protection against unwanted data disclosure. It automatically encrypts all files before storing and decrypts the files again when they are opened, without any need for user intervention allowing confidential information of various kinds to be kept safe.

The F-Secure SSH application provides secure Internet connections for those who want to connect and access third-party applications such as e-mail and Intranet without security concerns. The application also provides a welcome means for network and server administrators to manage resources securely, remotely.

Somewhat surprisingly, F-Secure also launched an anti-virus application which, together with a virus signature update service, F-Secure says provides fully automatic protection against viruses and harmful content in all file types. To prevent infection, all files are automatically intercepted and scanned when they are saved, copied, downloaded, synchronized or otherwise modified. To date, no viruses have been discovered that target the Nokia 9200 series or versions 6.0 or later of the Symbian platform, so the ideology of F-Secure is obviously better sooner rather than later.

"As business becomes increasingly mobile, the accompanying risks also grow. In today's mobile business world, installing automatic security applications in all handheld devices is the only way to ensure that corporate information is always protected," said Risto Siilasmaa, president and CEO of F-Secure Corporation.

F-Secure FileCrypto, SSH, and Anti-Virus for the Nokia 9290 Communicator will be available when the Nokia 9290 Communicator becomes available in the U.S. later this year. All three products have been specifically developed for Nokia Communicators and optimized for the Nokia 9210i and the Nokia 9290 Communicators, while also offering full functionality and backwards compatibility on the Nokia 9210 Communicator.

Pricing for F-Secure FileCrypto for Nokia 9290 Communicator is $43.35 USD per unit, based on a 100-user license. F-Secure SSH for Nokia 9290 Communicator is priced at $119.85 USD per unit for a 100-user license. Pricing for F-Secure Anti-Virus for Nokia 9290 Communicator will be announced when the Nokia 9290 Communicator becomes available in the U.S.
