New low-end Nokias for the U.S.By Jørgen Sundgot, Friday 19 April 2002
Nokia has announced two new low-end models providing TDMA/AMPS connectivity; the Nokia 1220 with TDMA 800 MHz/AMPS support and the Nokia 1260 with TDMA 800/1900 MHz/AMPS support.

While TDMA and AMPS are wireless network technologies that don't receive too much attention in today's world of CDMA and GSM networks, such networks still exist in the U.S. and other locations around the world - and users of these networks need phones too. Consequently, Nokia has brought forward two new low-end TDMA/AMPS models, targeted at first-time and prepaid users.

Features are slim in the Nokia 1200 series, and the most important selling point is likely to be their price - which as of yet has not been announced

The Nokia 1220 (TDMA 800 MHz/AMPS) and Nokia 1260 (TDMA 800/1900MHz/AMPS) provide, among other features, e-mail, text and picture messaging, games, downloadable ring tones, and a phonebook with support for up to 200 entries, features that haven't been common in such basic models up till now. Speaking of games, some that have already been present in higher-end models for a while have now been placed in the 1200 series, including Space Impact, Snake II and Pairs II.

The phones provide up to 2.5-5 hours of digital talk time, up to 6.5-15 days of digital standby time and weigh in at 5.3 ounces, measuring 4.5" x 1.94" x 1.02". Nokia did not provide any further details of which U.S. carriers would offer the phones, nor at what price they would be available upon arrival.
