An upcoming study on behalf of wireless carriers highlights the mean data usage per user on AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint and T-Mobile for 2009-2010.
If you're fed up with "bits and pieces" reports on data consumption, a real study on behalf of the major wireless carriers is on its way. Validas is currently finalizing a comprehensive study that will provide definitive answers. The company's 2009-2010 Wireless Data Consumption study examines, analyzes and compares information drawn directly from actual consumer bills from 2009 and 2010. The full study will be available for purchase on September 1. Meanwhile, here are some of the highlights:
Monthly Mean Data Usage Per User in 2010
149.6 MB - AT&T
147.2 MB - Verizon Wireless
133.4 MB - Sprint
120.6 MB - T-Mobile
Validas reports that new smartphones, excluding iPhone and BlackBerry, drove the greatest increase in usage, with an increased mean consumption per user from 139 MB to 415 MB. As such, Verizon Wireless has jumped from 48.2 MB to 147.2 MB this year, while T-Mobile has jumped from 44.6 MB to 120.6 MB. AT&T jumped from 111.9 MB to 149.6 MB. Sprint, on the other hand, saw a decrease from 166.5 MB to 133.4 MB due to increase in % of users consuming 50MB or less per month.
Laptop Card Consumption
Mean data consumption among laptop card users has jumped from 1.37 GB to 1.48 GB. Verizon Wireless has seen the largest increase in mean usage per user, from 1.25 GB to 1.6 GB.
