Facebook is currently expanding its platform to let users share mobile apps, services and content. The company also hints at augmented reality features.
VentureBeat reports that Facebook is determined to embrace the mobile world in full. Rather than solely offering scaled down mobile versions of its social networking service, Facebook plans to socialize the mobile world by enabling users to for instance share mobile apps, services and content.
Erick Tseng, Facebook's new Mobile Products Manager, declined to comment on whether the social network would work with the large app stores to add such social features.
Perhaps more importantly, however, Erick Tseng did give a hint of augmented reality features being on its way to the social network. Needless to say, that would give Facebook an entirely new dimension on the go.
Imagine that you have a Facebook app with an AR tab running on your phone. Whenever you hit that AR tab, your phone camera's viewfinder will be activated with a Facebook layer on top, showing relevant content from Facebook in general, your network or friends - all based on your current location.
To give a more specific example, let's say you stand in front of a theater. If you move the theater to the center of the viewfinder, you can then for instance see what movies are currently playing at that theater. Furthermore, you can for instance see which of these movies have been "Liked" the most on sites like IMDB and Fandango. Finally, you can then filter this specific augmented reality view to see if any of your friends have "Liked" any of these movies.
It's not difficult to see the potential of your Facebook friends appearing in your augmented reality. It smells like a next-generation Facebook experience that we certainly hope will arrive sooner rather than later.
