Last year, we posted a story on the road ahead for Nokia Nseries. We highly recommend that you read it in full before reading on, to get a better view of what's going on.
Then, Nokia today made an official statement regarding the road ahead for Nseries. Given we explained these things back in November 2009, it basically means that there's been no confusion within Nokia HQ's walls regarding how things will go down.
Anyway, the Nokia N8 will be the only Nseries device powered by Symbian^3. While the company can't comment on future devices, Anssi Vanjoki, the new head of Mobile Solutions, says it's a strong possibility of seeing a Symbian^4 Nseries device. We take that as a corporate message of there being a Symbian^4 Nseries device in the pipeline to be released in 2011.
Now, Nseries have consisted of several types of solutions to date. There's been the N9xx series at the top, providing mobile computing solutions. Cutting-edge phones in this category have included phones such as the Nokia N91, Nokia N95 and the Nokia N900. These mobile computing solutions will no longer be powered by Symbian, but by MeeGo.
Then, you have phones in the N8x series, with popular phones like the Nokia N82 and Nokia N85, and soon, the Nokia N8 (known as the Nokia N87 before the model name change). So, what are these phones all about? Reaching a broader audience than cutting-edge phones (at the introduction) like the Nokia N95 and Nokia N900.
In 2011, we should expect to see Symbian^4 on phones that was traditionally marketed as N8x series devices. As Anssi Vanjoki puts it: "Symbian^4 will aim to attract iPhone and Android users." The N8x series has taken a hit from especially the iPhone lately, and Nokia plans to get them back with Symbian^4.
It's also worth noting that Nokia will release smartphones such as the Nokia C7 to target the popular touchscreen cell phone market.
