iPhone 4 Antenna Issue Explained by Apple and Steve JobsBy Sindre Lia, 25 June 2010
Apple's Steve Jobs offers a few quick tips for improving the iPhone 4 signal strength. We give Apple a free tip in return.

Following video reports showing how the iPhone 4's visible antenna bands make it easy to create an explainable signal drop issue, Apple and Steve Jobs have issued the following statement:

"Gripping any phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone," Apple told in a statement sent to PCMag's Sascha Segan.

Of course, "every wireless phone" includes smartphones like the company's own iPhone 4 as well as last year's iPhone 3GS. While not offering any tips for the iPhone 3GS (you can probably figure it out on your own), Apple does however say the following about the iPhone 4:

"If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases."

iPhone 5 likely to be released without visible antenna bands

Here's a free tip in return to Apple: On a very cold day in 2011, release the iPhone 5 without visible antenna bands and blame it all on cellular network issues. While waiting for new iPhone 4s to be manufactured, or next year's iPhone 5 for that matter, check out the iPhone 4 in the video below:
