The Open Handset Alliance is pushing Android forward with a continuous stream of releases and upgrades. A market survey says it attracts the crowds.
A market survey conducted by comScore points towards Android OS rapidly increasing its market share in the U.S. Apple's iPhone OS also continues to climb, while RIM's BlackBerry OS, Microsoft's Windows Mobile and Palm's old Palm OS are seeing declines.
According to the comScore survey, RIM still has a significant lead with 41.6% market share, followed by Apple (25.3%), Microsoft (18%), Palm (6.1%) and lastly Android (5.2%). There's always the "expanding market" factor to keep in mind though. While market share percentages may decrease, the overall unit sales may increase.
Given the Open Handset Alliance's strong effort in pushing Android forward, with companies such as Google, Motorola, HTC and Verizon Wireless being among the key players for the time being, there's no doubt that Android's market share will continue to increase in 2010. The fact that companies like AT&T Wireless and Dell will start offering Android products this year too, should further stimulate Android growth.
Every single competitor is planning to release new and improved products in the second half of 2010 though, meaning that it would be natural to believe that Android OS will see slower market share growth then, though we're most certainly not sure. Verizon Wireless and AT&T Wireless currently hold the key to how the U.S. smartphone market will develop in the next few years. If both decide that Android should see strong growth, then Android will see strong growth.
