TechCrunch recently ditched an intern, and a video interview with this intern is now available online.
TechCrunch recently terminated the contract with an intern. In a video interview, the intern provides some background on how the current situation could emerge. When we first heard about all this, we instantly wondered why TechCrunch had interns in the first place. It now turns out that it wasn't an editorial internship, but eventually evolved into a writing gig anyway.
The video interview reveals that there's a long story behind what happened, mainly driven by a young boy's eagerness to succeed in the tech landscape. The intern describes the opportunity to "wear many hats" at TechCrunch as a key to his rapid success, and that's what also got him into conflicts of interest from an editorial perspective.
On one hand the intern is surrounded by big names in the tech industry, and on the other hand there are writers/editors that are trying to help him out from an editorial perspective. Everybody knows who the intern listened to, and everybody in the same position would have done exactly the same thing. There are simply no heavyweights in TechCrunch's editorial team that could make a significant impact. They're all "interns" at the end of the day as well.
