Let's forget about Windows Mobile 7 for a while and check out what Microsoft's Premium Mobile Experiences division might be working on.
Microsoft has denied that there's going to be a Zune Phone for a long time, as in denying that there'll be one, and only one, Zune Phone. On the other hand, Microsoft has been talking up Zune integration in phones as inevitable for a while now.
Roz Ho, Corporate VP of Premium Mobile Experiences (PMX) at Microsoft, is the head of a team working on consumer-focused projects in mobile communications. She has managed the integration of Danger since Microsoft acquired the company in April 2008. Back then, there was no doubt that Microsoft intended to offer Web-oriented cell phones.
We're now talking 2010 and Web-oriented has become buzz word number one when it comes to cell phones as well as smartphones. In fact, cell phones are now getting more advanced and competes increasingly well with smartphones when it comes to Web-oriented features. We can only imagine the buzz a hot new platform coming out of the Premium Mobile Experiences division would create, when everyone's waiting for a new and hot Windows Mobile platform. We can easily imagine the internal drama, as well.
Until today, there's been nothing but leaked concept images of two PMX phones, the Turtle and Pure. The Zune software update we reported on earlier this week has now turned out to be hiding hardware support for the pmxTurtle and pmxPure. Yes, that's right. We could simply be talking about not one Zune Phone being on its way, but two: The Zune Turtle and the Zune Pure.
How you get the Zune experience on a phone is obviously irrelevant as long as you get it, and it seems like Roz Ho and her team has spent some time ramping up the Danger platform to do exactly that. It also seems like there'll be a new service: Zune Studio. It's supposed to let Zune Turtle and Zune Pure users view and manage footage taken with their phone.
So, what else will the Zune phones offer? We have no idea, but Microsoft has in the past talked about connecting people to their social circles and other rich content, by offering an integrated end-to-end solution that enables people to interact with their friends, social communities and content through the Internet and Internet services. We guess it's a given what all that means in today's market.
Given that the Zune Turtle and Zune Pure have now appeared in the Zune software, we assume these phones will be released in the first half of 2010.
