The Nokia X6 has been available in a select few markets to date, but the Finnish manufacturer is now readying it for global launch.
When Nokia released the X6 last year, it became the first Nokia smartphone sporting a capacitive touchscreen, the same touch technology found in Apple's iPhone and Google's Nexus One. However, the Nokia X6 should not be confused with being a competitor to these phones.
If you take a look at our list of the best smartphones, you'll find Nokia's N95 up there competing with the best smartphones, despite being relatively old. Among many other features, the Nokia N95 is powered by first-generation PowerVR technology, and second-generation PowerVR technology has recently appeared in the Nokia N900, Apple iPhone, Nexus One, Motorola Droid, Palm Pre and others. In fact, Apple now owns 15% of the company behind the technology, Imagination Technologies.
The technology we're talking about is what turns a smartphone into a high-end multimedia device. An increasing amount of high-end smartphones now boast PowerVR technology, but the Nokia X6 doesn't. In other words, the Nokia X6 is not the phone for you if you're looking for a high-end smartphone that can pull off advanced multimedia tasks.
If we had been in charge of creating the Nokia X6, had it been powered by PowerVR technology? Yes. Had it been powered by the new Homescreen technology found in recent phones such as the Nokia N97 mini? Yes. Had we announced a Nokia X3 that is a standard Nokia cell phone? No.
Simply put, if we were in charge of creating the Nokia X6, we would have made the new Xseries about offering the latest and greatest all-in-one solution for mobile consumers. The good news is that Nokia is known to be working on new phones of the kind we're talking about here, and they'll also introduce a new touch interface that'll be more optimized for finger-based interaction.
So, if you consider buying the Nokia X6 when it gets released around the world in the first quarter of this year, keep in mind that the Nokia X6 is an evolution of the XpressMusic series. It combines music features, reached through the Media Bar, with an added touch of social networking capabilities and a Web browser capable of streaming YouTube videos. The Nokia X6 is a music / social networking all-touch phone, and should not be confused with being a high-end multimedia smartphone.
New Nokia X6 vs. Original Nokia X6
The new Nokia X6 will be marketed as the "Nokia X6 16GB". It'll not be a Comes With Music phone, but will offer free Ovi Maps out-of-box like all new Nokia smartphones moving forward. It'll also be available in four colors: All black, all white, white with pink highlights and white with yellow highlights.
The original Nokia X6 will continue to be sold as a Comes With Music phone in selected markets. The Nokia X6 16GB will be available worldwide in Q1 2010. A price has yet to be announced.
